Born January 18, 1919, Guilford Robert Booth was the son of Guilford Dudley Booth and Regina Proulx of the village of East Aylmer. When the Second World War broke out in September 1939, Guilford was manager of a restaurant in Hull. He enlisted at the age of 20 in the 2nd Field Battery. Two weeks later, he married Madeleine Moore, of Hull. Guilford received training as an artillery gunner at the regiment’s base in Montreal. His regiment was among the first to be deployed, sailing from Halifax in December 1939.
This regiment was among the first of the Allied troops to be deployed in France in June 1940, to stop the advance of German troops, but without success. The regiment was thereafter deployed on the fronts in Sicily, Italy and western Europe.
On June 6, 1944, the regiment accompanied the assaulting infantry of the 3rd Division during the invasion of Normandy, and according to the regiment’s historical records, the gunners “fired their self-propelled 105mm howitzers from the decks of their landing craft on the “run in” to the Normandy beaches”. “Operation Atlantic”, which began on July 17, 1944, was a Canadian offensive to seize the city of Caen and its surrounding villages. Following the liberation of Caen, Booth’s regiment led the attack in the direction of the village of Louvigny. The Canadian troops, after intense combat, were able to attain their objective; however, the German troops retook the village in a ferocious counterattack.
Guilford Booth was killed that same day near the village of Verson, at 25 years of age. He is buried in May 1945, next to his fallen comrades, in the Canadian War Cemetery of Bretteville-sur-Laize in Basse-Normandie, France.
